Like the stripes that occur naturally on a freshly mowed yard, this blanket uses greens that are just a shade or two apart. The dark edges are meant to represent trees or bushes around the perimeter of a yard and the ruffles represent the cut grass that is blown out of a mower without a catcher on it. This blanket would look equally fluffy in shades or pink or blue or any color that cuddles your heart.
Finished size: 36" x 28"
Notes: This blanket is created using a hybrid of crochet methods. The stripes are created with Tunisian crochet. The ruffles and edging is traditional crochet.
Despite it's name, Tunisian crochet probably did not originate in Tunisia.
Materials:
100% Acrylic Medium (4) Weight Yarn, 700 yds of each of two Main Colors (1400 yds total)
Lion Brand Wool Ease Medium (4) Weight Yarn, 110 yds of Accent Color
5mm Tunisian Crochet hook
5mm Crochet Hook
Gauge: 14 Tunisian stitches = 3"
Each stripe should be 3" wide and 30" long.
Directions:
Using Tunisian crochet and one of the Main Colors, complete the first stripe to measure 3” x 30”.
Connect the stripes as you go by starting the chain for the second stripe in the bottom right corner of the first stripe using the second Main Color. Chain 14 to the right, then you are ready to start working the first Tunisian forward pass from right to left. When you get to the last stitch in a row, go under the new stripe as well as the old stripe and pull the new
loop through both colors at once.
You will make a total of 12 stripes - 6 of each color.
Once all stripes are complete, using Accent Color, make a row of single crochet on top of the seams where the stripes are joined together. (This helps smooth out the look and adds a nice shading as well as giving a simple base for the ruffle.)
Using Accent Color, go around the entire outer edge of the blanket with Spray (spike cluster) edging.
With the main colors, add the ruffles using 3 HDC in each of the SC Accent Color rows that you have placed between the stripes. (It doesn’t matter which main color you start with. You will alternate ruffle colors and wind up with a total of 11 ruffles in between the 12 stripes. Do not add ruffles on the outer edge where the Spray edging is.

The tight weave of the Tunisian crochet makes this small blanket a powerhouse of warmth. The smooth underside keeps the heat close to the body while the ruffly top adds a gently whimsical decoration. This blanket can be loved by your family for years as a baby blanket or a lap blanket.
