I was watching a movie in which a character had a bathrobe with vertical stripes in royal blue, black and white. The colors and patterns really caught my eye. I don’t remember the name of the show but it might have been the movie “Awakenings”. This afghan would be equally stunning if the royal blue were replaced with any bright, jewel-tone that cuddles your heart.
Finished Size: “ x “ I'm still working on this pattern - but I'll let you know when it's finished.
Notes: This afghan is worked lengthwise to facilitate the creation of the vertical stripes.
Stitches:
Extended Single Crochet (ESC) - Insert hook through one loop of chain or previous row and pull up a new loop so there are two loops on the hook. Yarn over (YO) and pull through first loop. YO and pull through both loops.
Front Loop Only (FLO) - Instead of going under the entire stitch, just insert the hook under the front portion of the stitch and proceed as normal.
Back Loop Only (BLO) - Instead of going under the entire stitch, just insert the hook under the back portion of the stitch and proceed as normal.
I love the "Crochet Stitch Bible" for great visuals and instructions on a variety of stitches.
Materials:
JT 100% Acrylic Medium (4) Weight Yarn, 1400 yds of royal blue or any jewel-tone (I used 2 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo)
WH Worsted Weight, 1000 yds white (I used Lion Brand Pound of Love)
BL Worsted Weight, 1000 yds black (I used Lion Brand Pound of Love)
Gauge: 3 rows of ESC should be 1.5” wide. 5 sts = 1.5” height.
Directions:
Chain 200 with JT. Work 3 rows of ESC.
*Switch to BL. Work 1 row FLO (demonstrated in pictures below) and one row BLO.
Switch to WH. Work 2 rows of ESC.
Switch to BL. Work 1 row FLO and one row BLO.
Switch to JT. Work 3 rows ESC.
Repeat from * until pattern reaches your desired width**, ending with 3 rows ESC in JT.
Finish with border using BL go 6 times around working 1st, 3rd & 5th rounds FLO and 2nd, 4th and 6th rounds BLO.
**Typically adult afghans are 60” x 60”. 200 stitches will make this afghan extra long. Plan that the border will add 1.5” to total width and height.
